The Old District Jail housed Charleston's most notorious criminals, enslaved people, and Union prisoners of war from 1803 to 1939. It, along with its Work House for disobedient slaves, mental institution, and Civil War hospital, were places of torture, injustice, and executions. It became the final resting place for thousands who remain silently interred there today.
