Sister Cities: Charleston & Savannah

Savannah, Ga., and Charleston, S.C. - cities whose histories overlap in many ways, yet each is distinctly different.

Some humorously consider them rival sister cities, a joke with precedence in their history. Savannah was founded as a "buffer" to protect Charles Town from Spanish mauraders in St. Augustine. In 1733 King George II sent James Oglethorpe to the Carolinas (at that time Georgia was part of the Carolina colony) to establish a fortified city to push the Spanish back into Florida.

Our drive to Savannah will include seeing many historic sites along the way, including the beatufulOld Sheldon Church ruins. Once in Savannah, we will explore its historic squares, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, and the famous Forsythe Fountain, as well as sites associated with the movies Forest Gump and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
