AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
Perhaps the most significant event to shape South Carolina's and Charleston's history was the American Civil War, the first shot of which was fired from batteries on Morris Island and Fort Johnson at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, (or maybe Jan. 9 of that year if you go with the Star of the West version of events).
The subject is far too large to be covered in an essay. Or even a lot of essays. The facts of the war are pretty well known, thus I will use this page to include essays on various parts of the war as it pertains to Charleston and are perhaps lesser-known stories. I imagine the page will be evolving for a while.
