MEPKIN ABBEY
Mepkin was one of America's Founding Fathers, Henry Laurens', four plantations. In the mid-20th century, it was home to Henry and Clare Booth Luce, both prominent members of America's publishing, social and political circles. Clare Luce left the plantation to a group of Trappist monks who live at and maintain the property today.
Today, Mepkin Abbey is a community of Roman Catholic monks established at Mepkin in 1949. Founded by the monks of Gethsemani in Kentucky, the brothers of Mepkin belong to the worldwide Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance, popularly known as Trappist. Following The Rule of St. Benedict, the monks devote their lives to eight hours of prayer, eight to spiritual study, and eight to work. Living by the work of their hands, the monks provide a livelihood for themselves and others without means.
